Satellites=0, Raccoons=1
Day #3 in Montreal. The friendly people from a local gallery gave us two bicycles for the duration of our stay. Now that we are mobile there is nothing that can stop us. So we set out to climb Mont Royal, apparently the highest peak in the city.
Riding a bike here is almost like riding a bike at home. Interestingly enough red stop lights are basically ignored by cyclists here (except when there is cross traffic or somebody on foot wants to cross the street). Took us about an hour to get used to this but now we just roll on.
The road up Mont Royal is steeper than we imagined but we finally reach the viewpoint where everybody else also stops. Our goal today is to check our radio equipment and maybe catch the signal of one or two satellites. Right when I started to look for FO-29, a raccoon watches me curiously. It even poses so we can take this nice picture. We had less luck with satellites though, but it still was fun to fiddle with our radios. Next time we will bring the funcube dongle and our laptops so we have more accurate data regarding the when and where the next pass will occur.
The red square on my shirt doesn’t stay unnoticed for long. Its meaning is support of the ongoing protests and wearing it has been declared illegal on the grounds of Bill 78 (at least that is what we were told). Nevertheless you see red squares everywhere in town, some big ones hanging from balconies and of course the little ones that people pin on their shirts. Seems like the more pressure the government imposes on the protesters the more people show their support and their disagreement with current politics.
